A desireable location (most neighbourhoods claim this) for urban family dwellers; a few blocks from the canal, a few blocks from the Ottawa River, and most significant, a few blocks from a really delicious cafeteria style vegetarian restaurant. I had dreams of us skating on the canal all winter long and now we will be close enough to realize this.<br />
<br />
For the past few months, after I sold our house in Syracuse and moved my family back to my home country, the great white north, and living out of suitcases for the duration of the summer, we are finally settling into our new city. Kids start school on Tuesday and I managed to find a place (and make a decision, most difficult) on where to live. AND get them registered just in time. phew!<br />
<br />
I still have to find a job to pay for this place and other essentials, and hopefully that will happen too! In the mean time I'm going to see how I feel about blogging. Perhaps I have a story I want to tell, perhaps not.<br />
<br />
I am doing an interesting, long overdue project for my parents right now though, which may be of interest...<br />
<br />

<br />
Yep, an original Henry Miller Eames Chair, rosewood veneer and other mid century modern goodies. Isn't the insulation filled wall a good back drop? I think so, kind of an industrial-abandoned look going on here.<br />
<br />
Those sling back chairs in the background, oh so comfortable, even after 40 years and 4 working rubber bands to hold up the seat! 20 years of heavy use starting back in the 70's when my mom and dad were moving from basement apartment to town house to single house where they hired an interior designer to hand pick furniture for their all white rugged kid free living room.<br />
<br />
More later on this project, hope all is well with you out there.<br />

Closed on June 12. Everything couldn't have gone better; events happening according to a schedule even though the prerequisite offer to those said events was serendipitous.<br />

I listed the house just when it needed to be, although it took a few
weeks longer due to snow, final touches and negotiating with the real estate agent a proper price. A very interested buyer submitted an offer, meeting the asking price plus 100.00, with in 24hrs of listing. I accepted it
after the weekend. The inspection, the negotiations, the bank assessment, the fixes, etc.
all happened within two month time frame. The buyer agreed to a later closing day to accommodate my child's school year schedule. The buyer was perfect and sweet, which made passing on the house so much easier.<br />

<br />
The 4+ weeks time I gave myself for sorting through stuff, eliminating and moving boxes down two floors to main floor and then to basement and out to POD. Working several hours a day, enough to feel like I was making progress yet also spending valuable time with preschooler, scheduling swim lessons and book club assuring we get out of the house. Enough of a work out but not kill me. Realizing and Recruiting my neighbour to help me move one big item each day into the POD, allowing me to then stuff it like a puzzle with all the little boxes. Everything that I wanted fit into POD and
everything I decided to part with, either selling or giving away went. <br />

It just could not have gone better. Even budgeting my savings to last a year, down to the last $100.00 dollars,
before closing and receiving the house $$. Phew!<br />
<br />
I'm officially a visitor in the US now, another thing I needed to deal with, surrendering my VISA. We are living out of suit cases in a friends house, enjoying our easy going month of nothingness but summer fun in July.<br />
<br />
What happens next, a bit of mystery. Hopefully events will unravel in the same smooth way. Moving to Ottawa, finding a job or making one happen. Getting kids enrolled in their new schools.... or perhaps some other kind of adventure. Who knows.<br />
<br />
This blog was originally about renovating the house, with a whole lot of other stuff happening in between. I believe, this is where it ends too, until my future becomes more apparent!<br />
<br />
"So long, Marianne", as we used to saySarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04452327552545924020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4401260591426765435.post-72240261683690885332014-06-02T08:49:00.001-04:002014-06-02T12:29:29.648-04:00Bye bye Moses Basket<i>Document an object and let it go</i>.<br />
Two weeks until the official, unceremonious house closing day, and I am one week behind in cramming stuff into the POD.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK_2tcisrWwI0igvnVnWUNWZspUU-vqUFtQogNl18yUZvVQ7oJHuhoVACd9q4jyTPB8RLEb1_dpZug3E9N3zL16Pe3lyA4rLtD0R6CDFA7wRt36swVzTDaL7GbnZMHPrC1XSnkdflD3LsG/s1600/IMG_5384.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK_2tcisrWwI0igvnVnWUNWZspUU-vqUFtQogNl18yUZvVQ7oJHuhoVACd9q4jyTPB8RLEb1_dpZug3E9N3zL16Pe3lyA4rLtD0R6CDFA7wRt36swVzTDaL7GbnZMHPrC1XSnkdflD3LsG/s1600/IMG_5384.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But luckily, I gave my self a two week buffer and am basking in the joys of planning and knowing myself so well. The attic is almost empty with the exception of two rugs and a sweeping. The next floor down, beds are disassembled and packed in POD, mattresses laying on the bedroom floors. Bureaus disassembled, hauled down and packed in pod. Dresser drawers filled with delicate and fragile objects and reinserted in bureaus. Clothes packed in containers, linens in boxes and carried out to POD. A suitcase each worth of clothes, scattered on the floors around the mattresses. The main floor of house is a disaster, sectioned off in groups; the last bit of must take furniture, boxes of things to take, a large pile of things to donate and the items that may or may not make it, depending how much room is left in the POD. <br />
<br />

<br />
Moving and packing and letting go of stuff. Sooner then one would like too, but also an opportunity to clear out excess and embrace a new
stage in life. The Moses Basket is a deliberate object to let go of. I can easily make room for this and cram it in. I know lots of people keep such a precious baby item and lots of people let it go. She would easily play with it, and has done so, but it has also sat in the attic for 4 years. Instead of bringing an extra monumental item, I give this object and precious time in our life a proper farewell. Bye bye baby stage. Hello 4 year old.<br />

<br />
When my first was born I was given 12 weeks of learning how to be a parent and mother before I had to go back to work. With my second my situation was a bit different and managed to spend a lot of time with her over the past 4 years. The first few years, while work was slow, I could not part with you and brought you along to work instead. You slept and fed and I held you and managed the office. When you were walking you continued to come to work with me. We had a corner of <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2011/11/little-hands-at-work.html">toys</a>, a couch and a <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2011/03/my-daughter-comes-to-work-with-me.html">computer to play on</a>. We took <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2012/04/brick-wall.html">walks around the campus</a>,<a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2012/10/brick-wall-puddle-jumping-and-sweater.html"> jumped puddles</a> and had picnics. You slept the afternoon away and I worked. And when you needed more socialization you went
to Tot Drop once a week and then a few days at a grandma type day
care. And then when we closed down our business we spent lots of time
together again hanging out, walking dog, going to park, visiting
grandma daycare, walking to the plaza. Building blocks, train tracks and
and little cities. Reading books, drawing pictures, cutting out shapes and even painting walls. Taking baths in the middle of the
day, making pancakes and muffins and following me around, helping me with my chores of laundry, grass mowing and <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/04/backyard-work.html">gardening</a>. Eventually we
signed up for a few activities, reading club, swim lessons and
pre-twinkle violin, which helped me keep track of the days of the week.<br />

2) This makes me smile.<br />

A toothbrush holder. My 4 year old is with her dad and when I see where
she places her tooth brush it warms my heart ... but the fact that she

<br />
<br />
3) And my IKEA HACK, <i>along with packing boxes, unloading stuff at
salvation army, researching living options up there and making killer decisions on what I may need up North and
what I should give away here and repurchase up there so everything I LOVE fits into the 16 x 9 x9 POD that will be delivered in a few weeks</i> I am researching ribbons and fabric for weaving on to the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50039552/">Gullhomen rocking chair </a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbAV-wHFYSttCD1EyM7pEpDoeODMPT1qH79t7m0ADugPa_Dz4i0dMzMFnxOqodjtkCtWI1-PU_iXYfOIxoMT6grk89io60LGzpcnBZRGg_wj039py5CJaW9hvW0SY_9X2cuV6rqkN4ONLw/s1600/IMG_7608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbAV-wHFYSttCD1EyM7pEpDoeODMPT1qH79t7m0ADugPa_Dz4i0dMzMFnxOqodjtkCtWI1-PU_iXYfOIxoMT6grk89io60LGzpcnBZRGg_wj039py5CJaW9hvW0SY_9X2cuV6rqkN4ONLw/s1600/IMG_7608.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of the pieces of furniture, er, I mean frame that I am opting to stuff in the POD is the wicker rocking chair, an IKEA favourite. Mine has been moved around from one apartment to the next house to the next, to the next (that's 4 total moves), since 2000. At first loved and oh so cool, and then eventually left outside where the elements got the better of it. I tore of the leftover rattan and am researching weaving options. I want some kind of colourful ribbon weave or maybe a pvc yarn for out door use, left over fabric (check out pinterest) ... which would be a great way for me to reuse and monument my past collection of t-shirts rather then hauling them off to the thrift store.<br />
<br />
4) House selling update. The house did sell, (did I mention that?) and besides the packing part, the inspection was signed off with a few minor things to fix (electrical covers in the basement, and a leaky faucet in the basement); the buyer's loan people came out to appraise the house since the selling price was significantly higher (for this area) then I bought it for. They need to see for themselves the kitchen reno, bathroom reno, vestibule upgrade (<i>even painted walls increase the value, he told me</i>). That was all approved. So other then that, its up to me to pack before the closing day which is mid June and perhaps re weave the IKEA rocking chair..<br />

One of the last <i>sort of </i>home projects I wanted to complete before I sold the house was to update the ikat stools that were kicking around for many years. They had resided in many rooms throughout the years but eventually landed in Little L's room. They worked well there but the colours were no longer relevant. <br />

I took up crocheting last winter during my son's bi-weekly soccer practices. I completed his blanket in the fall. My fingers were itching to do more, now that winter had arrived and the indoor bi-weekly soccer practices resumed. On a whim I checked out A.C. Moore's closing clearance sale and discovered the empty yarn aisles. Except for these two colours, peacock blue and coral yarn. The exact colours of Little L's room. One done, another to go and a month left of indoor soccer practice.<br />

<br />
In regards to the sale of my home, we listed it on a Thursday. Had a potential buyer come look at it the same Thursday evening and they were so thrilled with it they put in an offer the next day. We let the 4 other interested folks check it out on Fri and Sat and then I decided to sign off on the offer. The offer met the selling price plus a bit, they had no conditions and the young man really loved it. I believe the house would really suit him. It happened much faster then I anticipated and needed to ask for a few more weeks before closing day (mid June) so my kid could finish off his school year undisturbed. And he kindly accepted that.<br />
<br />
We are just signing off on the inspection notes and then I will have two months to pack and load a POD.<br />
<br />
Each step has brought me closer to my reality and moving back to my home country. Our hearts are heavy as we have lived here for 15 years. My kids were born American. My son has a close group of friends he has to part with. I too. I wonder if I am doing the right thing, will my kids forgive me? is there a loop hole I missed? Could I have tried harder? Or perhaps I didn't want that fight (Visa requirements state once I close down my business I must leave <i>since I am no longer useful to the US</i>). I hope to get warm fuzzy feelings upon my repatriation. In the meantime I am day dreaming trips to Bora Bora. My coping strategy!<br />

Most exterior fixes will occur on warmer days and hopefully that will happen in the next few weeks.</i><br />
<br />
The above paragraph was written a month ago, and today, another snow day and 10 - 15 inches of snow in the forecast. But somehow I have managed to make a little progress on the front, such as spray paint the numbers, buy a new exterior light and I found some old exterior paint in the basement and started touching up. But still need a dryer and warmer day to complete the exterior list<i>.</i><br />
<br />
Phase 4 - fix up the exterior - the pending list:<br />
<br />
1) remove rusty street numbers, sand and spray paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzUMHIe8ktAJY59FQV0MMF_7uPPtUa1aRBrqvUN8thTt6Ksierux1E-knKld_jmJQ5_mFTW8_p5Dpj1Q56uUQN2n-kFe1FHmdY81C5SwU8inegFJNaIZjRopRRl8sNqCq5NW4UTO5Xt4pB/s1600/IMG_7260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzUMHIe8ktAJY59FQV0MMF_7uPPtUa1aRBrqvUN8thTt6Ksierux1E-knKld_jmJQ5_mFTW8_p5Dpj1Q56uUQN2n-kFe1FHmdY81C5SwU8inegFJNaIZjRopRRl8sNqCq5NW4UTO5Xt4pB/s1600/IMG_7260.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2) replace broken exterior door light - <i>have purchased and returned two lights already - it remained broken for a reason - last attempt tonight and I'll get the right one!</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGG2ynlZGlWnKDAAOIVTUqOlz6-0J7SAo6dRg7P6K4xO4HXEgX_e9xnMaGkU6gdqc2FYmHHnB-5THaQWTOMThV-Va-1WUhdbEb1lttRZ4LROuZjon2U0EPuouBzwlsEhqJeTM5d4nrzqQx/s1600/IMG_7261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGG2ynlZGlWnKDAAOIVTUqOlz6-0J7SAo6dRg7P6K4xO4HXEgX_e9xnMaGkU6gdqc2FYmHHnB-5THaQWTOMThV-Va-1WUhdbEb1lttRZ4LROuZjon2U0EPuouBzwlsEhqJeTM5d4nrzqQx/s1600/IMG_7261.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
3) Paint porch - wait for a dry week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0GxbvNM64CRrbYUaWuMvLUkfz5vm3lebD_BffmOCrWilC56RQPqjgFc5pE8Af6Al_O98JPtaMO844TFbbAnZYu95CtDKcJL3EFAKLjmQZZgnMWa-UWqEc3EeD4pV4_W8KxdbqlhXU7o_X/s1600/IMG_7277.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0GxbvNM64CRrbYUaWuMvLUkfz5vm3lebD_BffmOCrWilC56RQPqjgFc5pE8Af6Al_O98JPtaMO844TFbbAnZYu95CtDKcJL3EFAKLjmQZZgnMWa-UWqEc3EeD4pV4_W8KxdbqlhXU7o_X/s1600/IMG_7277.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
4) Purchase, install and paint railings and spindles for front entrance - some mortgage loans, like FHA, are more strict about safety concerns - thus, preemptive, but putting railings around the porch.<br />
<br />
5) Deal with chipped paint.<br />
<br />
6) Its winter, shovel and maintain drive for drive-by appeal; spring time, weed and and watch the spring blooms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuH15qam5KB38hJm3xx0ZQSpswAnmW15dZbAKc4mF9TZGbNGM-bPd4h9emJzgGOBTnmwYnSMWZR2LxFFRq_5N3fe00FaqUxzpOwTsC8WKgGTN_DRiIQlHSGmQ-2WiVM2LYC3R0VFrxUYil/s1600/IMG_7187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuH15qam5KB38hJm3xx0ZQSpswAnmW15dZbAKc4mF9TZGbNGM-bPd4h9emJzgGOBTnmwYnSMWZR2LxFFRq_5N3fe00FaqUxzpOwTsC8WKgGTN_DRiIQlHSGmQ-2WiVM2LYC3R0VFrxUYil/s1600/IMG_7187.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily the sidewalk had been replaced before I bought the house. But the loan was via a property tax program, transferred to me. It will transfer to the new owners, but there is only a year left,so they will be happy to see the taxes decrease.<br />

The agent came last week and now I am waiting to see what her research reveals about a selling price ... and if this open and bright and light stairway, with a really cool West Elm pendant light doesn't catch the prospective buyer at first sight, then boo on them.<br />

And no, the room was not painted for potential new occupants, I broke all the rules. I let my son choose the colours, after all it is his room until the end. I want him to feel like he has some control of his desires, opinions and future. He is handling the upcoming move well enough, but he is the one that has the best group of friends here and this place, this community is closest to his heart, having lived his first 11 years here.<br />

The real estate agent comes next week, her initial run through. I decided to track down the same real estate agent I have used 3 other times. Once I heard her voice I knew I made the right decision. I know she will give me a list of things to add to my <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/search/label/prep%20for%20sale">prep to sale</a> lists, but I am looking forward to the visit, perhaps some validation on the work already done. After that visit, we are taking off for some winter fun, skating, sledding, snowboarding and visiting family and friends.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04452327552545924020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4401260591426765435.post-90218821664627997652014-02-06T14:54:00.004-05:002014-02-06T14:55:41.838-05:00Bedroom, completed The last item on the bedroom list is completed. The baseboard window frames scraped and painted. Window pane hot glued back on. A

I did want to play around with the closet, either tear down the middle part of the wall, exposing the window and building a bench. This would allow lots of light in the room and a cozy place to sit. OR maybe I would have torn out the wall and put in Asian type sliding doors. For now, the blue patch door remains. Although I'm calling this room done, there is still work to be done on the doors, the one with the missing panel and the closet door. But that can go on a different list.<br />
<br />
<i><b>The to do list</b></i><br />
<strike>Fix broken glass pane</strike><br />
<strike>paint trim</strike> <br />
<strike>paint baseboard</strike> <br />
<strike>remove mirror</strike> woo hoo!<strike><br /></strike><br />
<strike>Paint walls</strike> <i><a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/03/calamine-lotion.html">here</a></i><br />
<b>paint blue splotch on closet door.</b><br />
<strike>Remove
two shelves on other walls</strike><br />
<strike>Hang picture frames / Make gallery wall</strike>. <i><a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/04/gallery-wall.html">here</a> </i><br />
Remove hardware (door handles and plates) in order to remove years of white paint.<br />
Refinish hardware.<br />
<strike>Curtain rods</strike> - <i>temporary solution installed</i>. <br />
<b>Find a new OLD door or fix hole in door.</b><br />
<strike>Create some kind of headboard</strike>. <br />
<strike>Build & paint wall.</strike><br />
<strike>Or insert french doors.</strike><br />
Revamp closet - either open up middle section to expose window. Or....???<br />
<strike>Edit wardrobe</strike><b>.</b> <br />
Mount a tv on the wall w/ a wooden console thing under it.<br />
Paint
ceiling. BUT first remove that bubble popcorn ceiling paint. Yuck (Will
probably never get around to do this, but it should be done)<br />
Install ceiling light - electrical work (probably wont get around to that either)<br />
New linens and duvet.<br />

<br />
While I was prepping and checking my paint inventory to paint the newly erected wall, I wondered if I had enough <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/04/bedroom-wip.html">Puccini pink</a> paint left in the gallon to cover the entire wall to finish my room. Taking the cautionary route, I decided to use the leftover hallway colour (<a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/cameo-stone.html">Cameo Stone</a>) to cover a block in the middle of the wall. And then I decided to add some lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwHRSwCXfpopixzyaHUH9_ius4-jl-RO1RRgekXi6krZDjNDPWaUWvsT05XtyiGeoANC6l86XQrkbH-QO_QCGjPJw1DOKh0nja2KZw2yoP9vIOmjn0Xi0eAFOHqrwKQcYF_YBOWIirgIvo/s1600/IMG_5165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwHRSwCXfpopixzyaHUH9_ius4-jl-RO1RRgekXi6krZDjNDPWaUWvsT05XtyiGeoANC6l86XQrkbH-QO_QCGjPJw1DOKh0nja2KZw2yoP9vIOmjn0Xi0eAFOHqrwKQcYF_YBOWIirgIvo/s1600/IMG_5165.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have painted <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2011/05/grey-and-white-striped-wall.html">stripes</a> before, a few years ago (<i>and the week before Christmas</i>); Since then I had read a new technique and thought I would try that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKkL9lA0NH0_0MeyrpJK7M_d-HjBIMaU74BypBBkwnFgTY_Zu7M5ir3MY5WmRd_q0HeK1G9VyidrQcn-hUGkDY4rXOd6WzzGktscaWBTmZ_p4__gzU4EGQSTI1Z1_FB32YLm2RijeQE2w/s1600/IMG_7345.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAKkL9lA0NH0_0MeyrpJK7M_d-HjBIMaU74BypBBkwnFgTY_Zu7M5ir3MY5WmRd_q0HeK1G9VyidrQcn-hUGkDY4rXOd6WzzGktscaWBTmZ_p4__gzU4EGQSTI1Z1_FB32YLm2RijeQE2w/s1600/IMG_7345.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After taping off the area, (which was all done by eye), take the base colour (in my case Cameo Stone, the lighter colour) and paint over tape and base colour, creating a barrier along the seam. Then apply the other colour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdchM4aiHDyRGz65C8HCkB6N1kSh-wuFbmCJro4NnTcOVuYgP61o6ScJ29AkxlfkQqEQFW3pd_KG5eakTK00sAqp28sgn36nC1CSbmMoXE8XNG216kuVT9IK4PPeVgtybSZH0grW9dSeXh/s1600/IMG_5166.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdchM4aiHDyRGz65C8HCkB6N1kSh-wuFbmCJro4NnTcOVuYgP61o6ScJ29AkxlfkQqEQFW3pd_KG5eakTK00sAqp28sgn36nC1CSbmMoXE8XNG216kuVT9IK4PPeVgtybSZH0grW9dSeXh/s1600/IMG_5166.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaZ9ZfjfDTWhmf5PSIThukaVRnphovtkVusMRb_uHM2jKvRMZsTuq0ZnBIdJGFC4Ct6k83SHYG-wnKsfnkGM1RLj-BQeunOiJso6CtUvwzk7Ztd-7fXIeYNGqFTbR3eVUox9l8Qgh_2zU5/s1600/IMG_5167.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaZ9ZfjfDTWhmf5PSIThukaVRnphovtkVusMRb_uHM2jKvRMZsTuq0ZnBIdJGFC4Ct6k83SHYG-wnKsfnkGM1RLj-BQeunOiJso6CtUvwzk7Ztd-7fXIeYNGqFTbR3eVUox9l8Qgh_2zU5/s1600/IMG_5167.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When pulling off the tape, <i></i> the barrier has prevented the other colour from leaking under the tape. And it works! The lines are seamlessly perfect. <i>I removed the tape as soon as I was done painting a second coat, if you wait until it dries there is a chance paint will chip off with the tape.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVKfUUc7pOgKLzoI7Y2-BNgvEhVREJpwGYQ3u-zXQooNtTmkKLWpiMXVEMBgpSM3MOCLvuumZYED53pHBJdBXyB_Pa1iGznF2-vX8Or6Uy1ruJgo727bq__KiiBwAisuoQa_nOW9d7a9KP/s1600/IMG_7346.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVKfUUc7pOgKLzoI7Y2-BNgvEhVREJpwGYQ3u-zXQooNtTmkKLWpiMXVEMBgpSM3MOCLvuumZYED53pHBJdBXyB_Pa1iGznF2-vX8Or6Uy1ruJgo727bq__KiiBwAisuoQa_nOW9d7a9KP/s1600/IMG_7346.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The only problem I encountered was a few specks of base paint peeling off with the tape. I assume this was due to the drywall and only a few coats of paint on the wall. An easy touch up job.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBg7F9s7ub3HacG5JXkDXDvx4SYkH5kXtzX7rP8lXCyX69DiTxfGiCrwge_YrERlGzNzl2MDQ5NfIxKu4YpX2dHueu_qpEG20-uEohRswbmou2AZ0hSprb7Dw5_Q1p0k7PJ18-K6eL4upw/s1600/IMG_7349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBg7F9s7ub3HacG5JXkDXDvx4SYkH5kXtzX7rP8lXCyX69DiTxfGiCrwge_YrERlGzNzl2MDQ5NfIxKu4YpX2dHueu_qpEG20-uEohRswbmou2AZ0hSprb7Dw5_Q1p0k7PJ18-K6eL4upw/s1600/IMG_7349.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm still painting the baseboards, the after, after will come later. <i>It has better proportions in this picture; when I first stepped back and looked
at it, I thought it was too narrow and tall, but now I think it will
work. </i><br />

Perhaps not as intricate or obvious as the one I saw in <a href="http://www.drivenbydecor.com/2011/11/headboards-that-anyone-can-afford.html">Anthropologie</a> a few years back, nor as easy to stick on as Urban Outfitters <a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/search.jsp?q=headboard+decal">headboard decals</a>, but
definitely less expensive and much lighter and easier to (not) have to pack up and move.<br />

This wasn't even on my short list of <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/face-lift-stage-interior-phase-3.html">interior projects</a>, but it's completed and checked off!<br />

The banister clasp had broken and the rail had been propped up in the hallway for a while. Re-intalling it wasn't a big deal, (<i>once I figured out which aisle the clasps were in</i>). Choosing a paint colour for that portion of the wall caused the delay.<br />

It had been a cold, blue white for a while, one that I did not like but wasn't sure what colour the rest of stairwell was going to be. Yesterday I tried <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/cameo-stone.html">Cameo Stone</a> but decided that had too much colour for the downstairs, (<i>the lilac side of Cameo Stone was too apparent</i>). Today I wanted it done, so I grabbed the half quart of Classic Gray plus 50% deeper and splashed that on. Perfect -neutral, warm, adds depth and accents the architectural detail. IT diffuses the black stairs and rail and transitions well with the upstairs wall colour ... so yeah, Kills it!<br />
<br />

Now I just need to caulk the seam and paint the trim. Another goal of mine is to empty some paint cans and that's coming along well too.<br />

I am not even done painting the hallway, yet I love it - probably because the 5 year old flat white was getting old so anything was better but I can't help thinking that I would use this colour in my next house too. It is between "<a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/one-room-down-6-to-go.html">classic gray</a>" (<i>more taupe then typical gray</i>) and "<a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/03/paint-swatches.html">wheatberry</a>" (<i>soft pink</i>) test colours I had on the wall. In the store it looked more tan with a hint of rose, but here it flickers and changes, from purple to off white to putty. Its warm. Its light. It is great for this wall and hallway, which gets all sorts of natural southern light through out the day. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

It also goes really well with the <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/03/painting-and-little-oil.html">Pinch of Spice</a>
I had tested and did NOT like, on the bottom portion of the stair well, many months ago,
and am now considering keeping it. I wonder if the new owners would like
our handprints left on the wall?<br />

all 8. (Including the <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/big-jobs-phase-2.html">Big jobs - Phase 2</a>) Yes, utter house chaos... Pieces of home debris littering the floors, tools scattered through out the house, at each task location. My little camera <strike>displaced</strike> FOUND. Chaos continues.</i><br />
<br />
<i><b>Details, facelift, little jobs for the added touch:</b></i><br />
<br />
1) Scrape paint off window glass from previous owners paint job. <i>Yay for my new glass scrapping tool. Boo in discovering the outside of glass is covered in paint too.</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

2) <strike>Scrub, clean and paint vents</strike>. Old, chipped, painted vents that I had
researched and planned to eventually replace with antique replicas...
for the time being functional vents that were acceptable to me, but
definitely worth a paint job for listing. <b><a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2014/01/grates-scrubbed-and-painted.html">Downstairs Completed!</a></b><br />

And polishing and painting. </i><br />

A much needed facelift. I
first tried black, because I had a bottle of black spray paint. That
seemed a little harsh and luckily I ran out by the 3rd cover. Off to the store for a softer colour, Oil rubbed
bronze gives the new, old effect, but not as harsh. Most of the hardware in the original house was a mix of <strike>shiny</strike> silver or bronze and I had been replacing door handles and light fixtures with oil rubbed bronze, so this should help with the continuity as well.<br />

I never did like the silver grates. Had looked into replacing them at Restoration Hardware but that added up to one large expense. Never a priority. Spurred
into action and having to sell home, a thorough cleaning and some spray
paint cleaned up the dulled and dinged silver. A quick fix, an easy upgrade. Each one was removed and cleaned in the laundry room washtub then placed on newspaper in the basement. While the grate was drying I came back upstairs and used newspaper and painters tape to cover and protect the hardwood. I cut a piece of card box to cover the opening. Back down stairs to spray the grate, then upstairs to spray the trim. 10 minutes of drying time and they were ready to be reassembled. Luckily this paint dries very quickly as the cats like to sleep on the heat.<br />
<br />
The cold air vents were given the same treatment.<br />

<br />
Here is Phase 2, the big job list. Most necessary items to do before listing, some not so big, but had been left undone for various reasons, mostly procrastination:<br />
<br />
1) Make wall, compound wall, sand wall, and do it again - WIP<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXqbYNV5hvD79DM9eaPXXOmuSzwoPUcSmU4Up8x4Vge11_yVME8TP5_mXu89oD1Go-qRt-5dgoxsy8eFhHs3ZpjJrnnLThmW0oPmXvAgC6jRjYCntZ0Zy0eiWK1329hz_IpctDue_c-XK2/s1600/IMG_7294.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXqbYNV5hvD79DM9eaPXXOmuSzwoPUcSmU4Up8x4Vge11_yVME8TP5_mXu89oD1Go-qRt-5dgoxsy8eFhHs3ZpjJrnnLThmW0oPmXvAgC6jRjYCntZ0Zy0eiWK1329hz_IpctDue_c-XK2/s1600/IMG_7294.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjcN_4W3cB-G2rthfjagVFjzOWlQLKj_kSlalKEi0NA6XXkGFEPToZFoxP4xWm6uLFG5_QuxoRiLVTrf1gExKqOD5iD_F1LXWUYkwBlovbmugEhCX02exJBXisMhpxgag1G0otdOIrSjP_/s1600/IMG_7290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjcN_4W3cB-G2rthfjagVFjzOWlQLKj_kSlalKEi0NA6XXkGFEPToZFoxP4xWm6uLFG5_QuxoRiLVTrf1gExKqOD5iD_F1LXWUYkwBlovbmugEhCX02exJBXisMhpxgag1G0otdOIrSjP_/s1600/IMG_7290.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
1b) Paint the other side of new wall, and rest of son's room. Paint my side of wall.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyHzrGGdBLfzEVGvWEwyZB-qN1goHJCmWQPCTLyQ4pnMK3Nu1pjL0Siwxy_ns05WLLhyphenhyphen3g6rjqfCNygbSj9PUfze9EgNQZUIuJBBXetBccY7fiaREo4-bZkX1R-z3N7WXiEvKNfHysiEhi/s1600/IMG_5127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyHzrGGdBLfzEVGvWEwyZB-qN1goHJCmWQPCTLyQ4pnMK3Nu1pjL0Siwxy_ns05WLLhyphenhyphen3g6rjqfCNygbSj9PUfze9EgNQZUIuJBBXetBccY7fiaREo4-bZkX1R-z3N7WXiEvKNfHysiEhi/s1600/IMG_5127.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrVYth7OAIP3fPknOHHB8_4nZkyC2OQ_l6t7-eVi2j7LF7zBGzu_DbkTMUQN67NsxNFp8-AmmMjIjWakGEfRaMv5adf6srdF7xUua3e3spXcHXS85g3cdfHNF9lgZOMKRCOO3O_4h-t3Pp/s1600/IMG_5128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrVYth7OAIP3fPknOHHB8_4nZkyC2OQ_l6t7-eVi2j7LF7zBGzu_DbkTMUQN67NsxNFp8-AmmMjIjWakGEfRaMv5adf6srdF7xUua3e3spXcHXS85g3cdfHNF9lgZOMKRCOO3O_4h-t3Pp/s1600/IMG_5128.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2a) Scrape old, chipped ceiling paint, fill light hole, paint ceiling in upstairs hallway - need a very long ladder and / or scaffolding. I have neither.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2LOEM_eIo5OO220c4ImbP-un2Xm65f_STQ-JAiVskIf-nBM2WKBMcxFVQRI17s9HXImyoBJtXt7jqa4uqcX9BrW2RR-zIfTNLQ9TqO46oSX_7MoHmyJBAubGD8hVcokQYKbpd2HRHKI2I/s1600/IMG_7287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2LOEM_eIo5OO220c4ImbP-un2Xm65f_STQ-JAiVskIf-nBM2WKBMcxFVQRI17s9HXImyoBJtXt7jqa4uqcX9BrW2RR-zIfTNLQ9TqO46oSX_7MoHmyJBAubGD8hVcokQYKbpd2HRHKI2I/s1600/IMG_7287.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcF7phmUBrc4SA-aaot1mlQ1pSuz7AkKAZekSVNcq1UATP3aa7T1MyQXMNEaRRwX23YGbLAs0V1giRJJSHeIUJYgqf9dI5xyEfocNzHgmCH5XHoZowhjW3on1U9nwMBULZEWmZ_IBBPVGB/s1600/IMG_7298.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcF7phmUBrc4SA-aaot1mlQ1pSuz7AkKAZekSVNcq1UATP3aa7T1MyQXMNEaRRwX23YGbLAs0V1giRJJSHeIUJYgqf9dI5xyEfocNzHgmCH5XHoZowhjW3on1U9nwMBULZEWmZ_IBBPVGB/s1600/IMG_7298.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2b) Paint upstairs hallway walls<br />
<br />
3a) <strike>Research replacement interior doors for bedrooms</strike> - 2 upstairs interior doors that had been hacked up by previous owner. <i>Found one salvaged door - two panel, already painted white, with door knobs. Mirror on back. Listed for 125.00. Not bad. but its an hour away. Home depot 118.00 for a two panel similar trimming, pine door for 118. Came up with a 3rd option - stay tuned!</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
3b) Fix or replace 3a) hallway doors - half the doors are painted white, so lots of painting to happen here as well.<br />
<br />
4) Raise microwave off of counter - <i><strike>a nuisance</strike>, now have a bid on ebay for microwave wall brackets, something that appears to be popular on other continents, but not here.</i><br />
<br />
5) Install shelf and magnetic knife holder<br />
<br />
6) Paint baseboards, door frames in kitchen<br />
<br />
7) Attach gate to poles (exterior fence - kind of an exterior phase 4 list item, but one that has been avoided)<br />
<br />

<i>Yea,
30,000 dollars of fixes for things I was fine to live with and
eventually get to, but now I need to do it for a sale. Except its an
old house and there are 5 more years worth of things to fix and then
start to replace AGAIN. <b>Having a cutoff point is necessary, or else I will never be done. Having an agent to sell and buyers that understand ... that this is NOT a new house, this is the charm of an old house. If they want new new new, they need to go to a different neighbourhood.</b></i><br />
<br />
<i><b>Disclaimer: These are the things I want to fix for the house. I am sure the real estate agent will approve of these fixes but also suggest more things to do - along the lines of compounding around exteior brick, mortar around fireplace in attic - unsightly things, but not problematic. I want my items completed before I invite the agent in so their list isn't discouraging or extensive.</b></i><br />

<br />
A long time ago I pinned a <a href="http://www.79ideas.org/2011/12/doilie-fantasies.html?showComment=1322842110302#c1004846879396197592">lacy, patch curtain</a> and started to envision trips to exotic flea markets and
antique shows, collecting various pieces of lace and doily's and making my own patchy curtain. And then showcasing it in my own breezy window either in the country farm home or urban brownstone. This lasted only a moment. Thank goodness for <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/thimblefull/display-and-storage/">pinterest</a>. Reality is, soccer, skiing and family things trump browsing; picking through vintage stained doily's and lace is clearly destined for another time in my life. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And then one day (today) I was preparing my house for sale and washing the linen
window treatments that were hanging in my bedroom.
The bed had been placed in front of the windows, and the pillows had
pressed against
the linen, pushing them against the winter damp glass windows. Over time they had become vintage yellow aged
from the window condensation. All my furniture is pushed aside right now because of the wall construction going on in the room, so a good time to reach the curtains and wash them. When I took them down they were
intact, other then the yellow stains. Taking them out of the laundry, much to my dismay, I
discovered two large holes. Apparently there was more wear and tear then just
the yellow stain.<br />

<br />
Before I had a chance to be completely bummed and solve my window treatment replacement problem, the lacy, patchy curtain plan came to the forefront of my mind. And while the baby napped, I successfully basted the one and only doily I have in my possession onto my worn and tired linen curtain.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJwn8bTHclEvWRjjDxWoA4WU5ftqnoha1YOY_GlmAtO8qqe9LvqYKF61Yalgd6uT2HbDifA8zx9cyzy24OAUS1lB-pDw4UndYgx6NQHtIXsgtXmduSolF2uKZ9d9ZitD3S8-rfpDwDnzYE/s1600/IMG_7275.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJwn8bTHclEvWRjjDxWoA4WU5ftqnoha1YOY_GlmAtO8qqe9LvqYKF61Yalgd6uT2HbDifA8zx9cyzy24OAUS1lB-pDw4UndYgx6NQHtIXsgtXmduSolF2uKZ9d9ZitD3S8-rfpDwDnzYE/s1600/IMG_7275.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<i>And now browsing <strike>antique shops</strike> <a href="https://www.etsy.com/search/vintage?q=doily">ETSY</a> is high on my list, so I can patch the other hole.</i><br />

Things were moving along sweetly, energy and motivation high. Counter cleared and oiled (not necessary to do for a wall painting job, but since the microwave had sat on the counter for a year, this area never got oiled.) Paint and brushes and drop cloth laid out. Keenness still intact. But when the ladder was hauled up from the basement and set up in the kitchen the task folded, faster then superman on laundry day.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: #674ea7;"><b><span style="color: orange;"><i>Insert picture here, but I do not have one - faster then bees to honey - toddler climbed up the ladder and started in on her balancing circus act. she was not going to stop and let me paint, so I packed up the ladder, paint and drop cloth and called it a day. </i></span></b></span></div>

While my table was covered with "stuff", I painted the
nook in the dining room. I had a 1/4 inch of classic gray paint left in the gallon
container that I used for the rest of the room, and I was sure I could cover this small area and finally complete one room,
But after a few strokes, blandness ensued and I couldn't convince myself to continue with the same colour. (<i>Above, left is the finished wall; on the right you can see a bit of the nook, when it was white, and the rest of the wall painted classic gray</i>)<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I had visions of a
darker shade of paint, a shadow. And even though I am listing the house
and all I needed to do was finish painting the room, I managed to talk myself
over to the paint store to play around with darker tones. A few minutes later I left with a quart of classic gray (Benjamin
Moore), but much darker, I can't say how much darker, and in the store I was a bit worried, the paint masters comparison swatches looked nothing like the colour on my wall. But I claimed, much darker and she produced.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9tHoI-n2P-6frFt3O0LazRrvLef4_AN8EctMi0r5cyVM6XZLeRT2hRcxxHrtTbHhWKohDcAfEdfi5HIdsXed4jYQCIEzpb0hY4qOv_qjbdgopCmsSvg2ETcCC9XLzY9dEDtKipmDLXHWx/s1600/IMG_7233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9tHoI-n2P-6frFt3O0LazRrvLef4_AN8EctMi0r5cyVM6XZLeRT2hRcxxHrtTbHhWKohDcAfEdfi5HIdsXed4jYQCIEzpb0hY4qOv_qjbdgopCmsSvg2ETcCC9XLzY9dEDtKipmDLXHWx/s400/IMG_7233.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Lighting changes this colour and sometimes its an off white, sometimes I can see hints of taupe and gray, and sometimes the nook colour looks exactly like the rest of the walls. But it is indeed a darker tone and has added some much needed intimacy in the <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/search/label/diningroom">dining room</a>. The shadow I wanted does exist and black accents and white borders really pop. <br />
<br />
Next up, painting and figuring out how to mount the microwave on this last wall to complete in the kitchen...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXWqQ7A1NJS1vhiUKVBNGqa34tO4T3aJZ1hHoApNh09Rm-9Cdd1hOAouuIXMBGdb2eq_P_rmdqHW9gBSYUVNt_TPcHCeAycKGC38gXwseHhHGQLCpZI4KMwbPZFFJTMeclBpw-HtCcVnD/s1600/IMG_7234.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKXWqQ7A1NJS1vhiUKVBNGqa34tO4T3aJZ1hHoApNh09Rm-9Cdd1hOAouuIXMBGdb2eq_P_rmdqHW9gBSYUVNt_TPcHCeAycKGC38gXwseHhHGQLCpZI4KMwbPZFFJTMeclBpw-HtCcVnD/s320/IMG_7234.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_vg_Ighhh5sijY6i4q2qvHf0A6YM2F-QF4V2BBHhkqJyHnlzuGuVIb9MlI-qD8j-m-gn52f7K1fHZ_mSqkNnLy8kh4RCO6TaO2QnQiONooOMrKejGKdLw4QywL42mhIpKtf7CfKCTCRs/s1600/IMG_7236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA_vg_Ighhh5sijY6i4q2qvHf0A6YM2F-QF4V2BBHhkqJyHnlzuGuVIb9MlI-qD8j-m-gn52f7K1fHZ_mSqkNnLy8kh4RCO6TaO2QnQiONooOMrKejGKdLw4QywL42mhIpKtf7CfKCTCRs/s320/IMG_7236.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<i>disclaimer: I am aware my photos suck! Many bloggers claim an overall improvement with their photography skills after running a blog for several years. Not me my friends, mine have worsened. And the replacement <a href="http://sara-another100yearoldhousereno.blogspot.com/2013/10/new-lens.html">zoom lens</a> I bought makes it difficult to get a decent angle. But I have hopes of a full house reveal in photos, eventually, So bear with me :) </i><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7bqxe-jrlLxGn0qNeRkymcncLhedYOrhfCr75mV3fAsRrISFTivwz-jOYVeThBpDDyhrxA3B98tI1zPfFO3UjiRslVpJk-AJgZu8DbdPYFlWimcNmbCp-FhRVwjGc-I0kLw5YJgE1IPYt/s1600/IMG_7204.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7bqxe-jrlLxGn0qNeRkymcncLhedYOrhfCr75mV3fAsRrISFTivwz-jOYVeThBpDDyhrxA3B98tI1zPfFO3UjiRslVpJk-AJgZu8DbdPYFlWimcNmbCp-FhRVwjGc-I0kLw5YJgE1IPYt/s1600/IMG_7204.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
At least I hope it does. And just to clarify, I am at the chaos stage. My dining room table has been piled high with the rest of the house so many times in the past 5 years ... many times during the kitchen reno, many times while painting, and now, again, while I paint (and clean and dust and organiz) that last area in the dining room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgusvuqoDxVWQmsSpQd8n0soYcCU2dsr0WX4fZPqG1zVLROAVZSB0TrHLuB5GqLHJ8NSdGSZk7z-oN6NqLggdzQH3cwEqbVa_hzFqHZQg4eX4-RrPnDBUqQ2O0y9MAyzLssIJlf1kOOtHUR/s1600/IMG_5101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgusvuqoDxVWQmsSpQd8n0soYcCU2dsr0WX4fZPqG1zVLROAVZSB0TrHLuB5GqLHJ8NSdGSZk7z-oN6NqLggdzQH3cwEqbVa_hzFqHZQg4eX4-RrPnDBUqQ2O0y9MAyzLssIJlf1kOOtHUR/s1600/IMG_5101.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Amidst the mess and bouncing around to different areas I'm tackling (<i>a days work: filtering through clothes in an effort to empty and reclaim several bins for other stuff, painting dining room nook and baseboards, purging craft supplies</i>) and also making time for myself and kids, I sometimes wonder if I am actually getting anything done. I have strategies, such as lists:<br />
<ol>
<li><i>A list of things to do, </i></li>
<li><i>A list of things to accomplish, </i></li>
<li><i>A list of things that I have started and need to get back to </i></li>
</ol>
<br />
... just to make sure some things do actually get finished before my cut off date.<br />
<br />
To add to the disarray and disorder I am also moving all the company stuff out of office and to my home. Yes, just what I needed, file boxes, extra computers and other random office junk. The printer has been warmly welcomed though and to be completely honest and candid, some of the file boxes are my personal things as I did most of my personal home admin stuff at work.<br />
<br />
So here's to 2014 and my 5 phase, 5 step kick off to dealing with extra stuff, decluttering, finishing touches, staging and preparing to sell home and relocate to another country, my homeland.<br />
<br />
<b>Phase 1: Paring down and organizing.</b><br />
<br />
#1. Get rid of things. Started that before Christmas. I have many bins in the attic to filter through and minimize contents. My smaller clothes and baby clothes. Toys, art supplies and lots of other stuff. Although I do not want to get rid of everything my goal is to fill up several bags each time I visit this task, and then closer to moving day I can easier decide what else to rid myself of.<br />
<br />
#2. Since the company closed down I have to move files to my house so I
can finish off work business here. In order to do that successfully, I
created an office at home (which required moving things out of blue room). My son was
adamant that I keep the home computer downstairs as well, so we bought a
tiny school desk for downstairs and moved the other desk upstairs. <br />

<br />
<br />
#3. Work on small tasks such as painting unfinished areas, baseboards,
nooks and crannies. Fixing bad painting from previous owners - something
that was on the back burner to deal with and now is the time. 5 minutes of my time while Lucy played in her room, and I
chiseled off the spilled paint on the glass door knob. When things are
more orderly I may return to this task and remove paint from all door
hardware. Also dealing with lack of proper curtain fixtures. For me,
that meant buying some dowels, painting them and resting them on
outdated curtain hardware. Temporary, yet easy solution. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
#4. Start organizing and packing up bookshelf contents, Box up half the stuff on my shelves now. Dust and "style". When its time to list house, paring down will mostly be done, but will be able to remove a few more items for a cleaner look. (Yeah, the top shelf still requires attention, but three boxes packed on the left used to reside on the bookshelf. Babysteps)<br />

<br />
<br />
#5. Remember, time. I do have time. Enjoy time with kid. Do some crafts. Use up craft supplies, instead of packing them.<br />

#6. Take down Christmas tree. Yeah, thats gotta go.<br />
<br />
I started this blog to collect kitchen inspiration and keep sane
while doing that renovation. I suppose now I can use this of a creative
outlet, a break, as well as account for progress.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04452327552545924020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4401260591426765435.post-16302946279307314462014-01-05T08:10:00.001-05:002014-01-05T15:48:08.974-05:00Happy New Year<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A lot of snow, a lot of shoveling. Welcome 2014.<br />
<br />
A lot of changes to come in this year too. Last year had me on hiatus from my day job, waiting (which really means making a lot of phone calls, pushing for the contract to be renewed) and eventually after several wins and take backs, we decided to close down the company due to the screwed up "can't name" client. But lets say sequesetration and shutdown affected us too. <br />
<br />
This happened 7 years ago as well. Closed down company (after numerous months of waiting for contract to be issued), sold house, packed and ready to move back to home land and then received the call from client. Instead of moving back to Canada, I found a place to rent and opened up another company. After several years of the contract being renewed I bought this house. I was very conservative when choosing a house, due to the instability (yet completely appreciative) of my job and my past gut wrenching experience of having to sell a home. It was always in the back of my mind that I would have to pack it in. Upon receiving the keys to the house I immediately started to renovate the seriously outdated spaces; insulation, chimney work, gutted bathroom, gutted kitchen, landscaping etc. in a effort to get it up to today's standards and ready to sell when I had to leave. The first few years it was a fun job, but as time, life and improvements happened the house grew on us and became our home.<br />
<br />

<br />
Eventually I will be listing the home but for now I have a wall to build and paint, a few ceilings to paint and a lot of organizing and decluttering. All while keeping my children oblivious to the up coming changes. HA. While searching for jobs in the morning, painting by day and getting lots of family time in the evening I will hopefully be piqued by future possibilities, distracted during the day and fully engaged in the evening and have an adventure ready for the summer.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04452327552545924020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4401260591426765435.post-35151528804371900522013-12-27T13:37:00.001-05:002013-12-27T13:37:16.398-05:00SNOW<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
